As Village Manager Pappalardo related in his detailed briefing on local Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) preparedness measures at the Village Board meeting held on February 25, 2020, we’ve all been following the daily reports on the COVID-19 infectious disease, commonly referred to more simply as “ the coronavirus.” Scarsdale Schools has also issued a Coronavirus Update.

As of February 27, 2020, there are zero confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the State of New York. The resources outlined herein will help you to stay up-to-date with respect to public health messaging on the topic of COVID-19.

This piece provides links to information that may be of value to you in accessing the latest information on the status of the disease and the significant public health measures being undertaken at all levels of government to respond to the issue.

Importantly, the Federal, New York State, and Westchester County public health officials and their respective agencies constitute lead agencies in responding to a threat of this nature. As such, these sources should be the primary trusted news outlets for current, accurate information.

Mass media and less formal news channels, including social media, range from fair to poor sources of information about COVID-19, so it is important to be selective in where you choose to access information to inform your actions taken in response to COVID-19.

Federal: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

The CDC is maintaining a timely and informative COVID-19 website, with English, Spanish, and Chinese documents available. The site includes a variety of reliable insights and advisory information, such as:

New York State: New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)

The NYSDOH hotline at (888) 364-3065 has Department of Health experts available to answer questions regarding COVID-19.

Similar to the CDC, the NYSDOH is providing public health updates through its Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage. The site includes such information as:

  • Advisories for Child Care Providers and Schools, such as the February 5 Letter to School Administrators. Please also note that Scarsdale Schools has also posted a Coronavirus Update.
  • Press releases from Governor Cuomo’s Office
  • Test results for New York City and New York State

The NYSDOH has also published a brief COVID-19 Video.

Westchester County: Westchester County Department of Health (WCDOH)

The WCDOH has also created a Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) webpage. The site includes general Coronavirus information available on the other sites and links to various information resources, including such examples as:

All members of the Scarsdale community are encouraged to access and utilize COVID-19 information and advisories from the CDC, NYSDOH, and WCDOH, as opposed to less reliable news and information resources.
