Arbor Day 2018

Hey, bud, it’s spring! Tomorrow is Arbor Day and Scarsdale is abloom with opportunities to recognize and appreciate the value of our tree canopy. A healthy tree canopy relies on a combination of thoughtful planning, tree maintenance and care, and tree protection. We all have a role to play in maintaining and enhancing our Village in a Park aesthetic; as a landscape steward standing in front of a mirror, what do you see in the reflection? BTW, join us for an Arbor Day Ceremony  tomorrow, celebrating our 35th Tree City USA designation!

Harwood Park Community Planting Day 2017

Community Planting Day

Get down and dirty this Saturday! Help make a difference by participating in the 4th Annual Community Planting Day, jointly sponsored by the Friends of Scarsdale Parks and the  Scarsdale Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department, with support from the New York State DEC Trees for Tribs Program. Wetlands provide important ecosystem services that benefit people, while also constituting important habitat for unusual plants and animals associated with such areas. Please help to make the Harwood Park Wetland Restoration Project a success.

How Green Does your Garden Grow?

Don't be contrary, Mary: Adopt landscaping best practices! Nothing says Scarsdale like arborvitae, right? Ugh. C'mon, Scarsdalians, let's put some panash back into our yards and gardens. Mix it up. Native plants offer a tremendous palette of colors, heights, textures, and scents to choose from. Challenge your landscape architect, gardener, or yourself to convert boring and non-native plantings to year-round color and excitement! "Almost every person, from childhood, has been touched by the untamed beauty of wildflowers"– Lady Bird Johnson.

April Showers

bring May flowers . . . and sometimes far too much rain all at once. While simple strategies such as replacing turf grass with native plantings and maintaining a healthy tree canopy are extremely valuable tools for mitigating the potential adverse impacts associated with heavy rains, including flooding and water pollution, public and private Green Infrastructure alternatives should also be considered. The Village's Stormwater Management Program helps to address local stormwater needs. Contact Public Works for more information.
